Everyone loves the innocence of a child. When their born they can truly have fun and life and find their own way through the world right. We can raise them, they can express themselves and get a good education in school right? Wrong, in 1890 one million of America's children were locked into working up to 20 hours a day! And now in 1910 that number has more than doubled. Why the other day I met this young boy no older than 7 who had lost his arm in a box factory. Guess what? He is still working there and because his family needs it. He's still working for as little as two cents a week. This child who has suffered far beyond what any child should is still working because he has to to help his family just get by. These Titans take advantage of our children just because they were willing to work for lower wages and easy to train. Of course their easy to train, but they should be getting educated with their sponge like minds. They shouldn't be wasting their lives learning how to build boxes. Their potential should not be undermined, it should be appreciated so it can grow to whole new levels. Something had to change not later, not soon but now!
I believe that we should not give up. Yes, we tried to pass the Keating-Owen act and it worked with congress, they agree. That twisted supreme court managed to say that our act was unconstitutional because congress couldn't regulate local labor laws. The supreme court is what is holding us back so don't give up, most of congress is on our side. Yes, there are some Congressmen being paid off by the industrialist but there are honest ones as well. There is enough that I believe we can still change our country for the better. Teddy Roosevelt just passed the "Tax on Employment of Child Labor". If this law were to go in to effect it would destroy businesses across the country who take advantage of a child and use them like tools for their benefiting. But, once again the Supreme Court rules this unconstitutional. Have no fear though my friends, business are actually releasing children from their jobs for what's to come. They know we won't stop and they've had two close calls. Although some still employ children with ruthless hours wages and conditions this is coming to a close. We're finally on the downward journey to end the abuse of child labor laws. I have a feeling that states will start to change their minds and something tells me by the mid-40's this will be all over. Who knows? Maybe the Supreme court might someday overrule their Keating-Owen decision. Like maybe someday around 1941 or so. When that happens we can all rest knowing we brought justice to our country, children and most of all our future.
Well, I'm a grandma now and I'm happy to say that I was right. The Keating-Owen act was overruled and I can rest easy knowing that even though my kids may not have always go the best of treatment my grand-babies will. In fact their going to school now participating in some extra-curricular and are really growing up to be fine young lads. My youngest is in second grade and knows more math than I do already. I'm glad that those who couldn't see it can now see the light of education in our young ones. Their excelling and I believe this will bring upon a greater future with every generation. It all started with the Keating-Owen act and it ended with it. It was a journey and we took some steps back as a country but we took a great leap forward.
When I was in the prime of motherhood watching my baby and other beautiful children being taken advantage of it hurt. It hurt deep. But now finally through the National Government offering money to the states for improving schools states following with bans of child labor hours wages and conditions people were stepping toward a better tomorrow. Yes, people loved it and no Titans hated it but it was hard for them to stay mad with billions of dollars, so all in all it made everyone happy. Titans had milked their abuse of children long enough and most were satisfied with the extreme profits and if they weren't no one really cared at that point because their money at that point should satisfy them. Most importantly though the people, the majority, the nation of the United States had taken a a stand against these Titans and showed that even with all that money the U.S.A. was a free country that could not be controlled by money but by FREEDOM!!!!
